The Madison Metropolitan School District will be moving to a two HMO model for health insurance as of July 1, 2017, with coverage through GHC and Dean. Our goal is to make this transition as smooth as possible. Our Human Resources Benefits Team and our health insurance carriers will be providing opportunities throughout May to answer questions and help employees make this transition.

If you are currently covered by GHC or Dean, you do not need to take any action and your coverage will continue as normal.

If you are currently covered by Unity, you will need to go through the process to switch to Dean or GHC. Enrollment forms are due to Human Resources by Friday, May 26.

If you do not know which insurance plan you have, please refer to your health insurance ID card. If you are unable to find your ID card or need additional help, please contact the Benefits Helpdesk at (608) 663-1692

How can I learn more?

There are several ways you can learn more before making your decision and turning in your enrollment forms:

  • Read our FAQ on transitioning from Unity to GHC/Dean.

  • Representatives from Dean and GHC will hold several group meetings to provide general information about their plans and answer questions. See a full schedule of meetings. See below to sign up for a meeting.

  • If you can’t attend a meeting, click here to watch the presentation.

  • If you’d like an individual meeting with GHC or Dean representatives, you can set one up here. These meetings will help you continue care for ongoing medical conditions, set up pre-approvals if necessary, transfer prescriptions and learn more about the plan based on individual circumstances. See a full schedule of meetings.

  • The HR Benefits team will visit all schools between May 8 and May 19. Staff members will be available from 11am-1pm on the designated day to answer questions and assist with completing enrollment forms. Find your school’s meeting.

  • You can also always contact our benefits staff by calling (608) 663-1692.

Plan Choices:

GHC Plan: GHC’s network includes GHC primary care providers and refers to UW hospital and clinics for specialty care.

Dean Plan: Dean’s network includes all Dean SSM and St Mary’s SSM clinics.

Waive Coverage: If you wish to cancel your coverage and not elect new coverage, you may do so. If you waive the health insurance, you are still eligible to enroll in the other benefit options. If you are waiving coverage to move to a spouse/partner's plan, please reach out to the Benefits Team for a Credible Coverage letter (if requested by the new insurance carrier).

Coverage Choices:

HMO: Allows you to visit in-network providers.

POS: Allows you to visit in-network providers or out-of-network providers (without a referral). The POS employee premiums are slightly higher than the HMO employee premiums and out-of-network coverage includes higher out-of-pocket expenses.

PPO: Only available to employees who live outside of the carrier’s service area.

Coverage Level:

In addition to covering yourself, you can cover your spouse or domestic partner, children up to the age of 26 and a child of any age who is not self-supporting due to a mental and/or physical disability. The coverage you elect will either be single (enrolling just yourself) or family (enrolling yourself and other eligible dependents).

Group 2: Custodian, Supportive Educational, Teachers (including Addendums) and Trades Groups
